With the economical crunch over the past few years and the ever growing popularity of going green, converting hid to CFL has become a growing trend. By simply by passing the HID ballast and screwing in a Compact Fluorescent Lamp, business have discovered that the S/P Ratio (Scotopic to Photopic Lumens) is great enough to be a viable option, providing adequate light.
Drawbacks of Retrofitting HID To CFL
As great of an option as this procedure is, many customers have found that the line voltage supplied to their HID fixtures is greater than 120 Volts, typically 208, 240 or 277 volt. In these cases, customer find themselves either not being able to find a CFL bulb in those voltages, with the exception of the TCP 277V spiral, or that the fixtures are too small to fit an equal wattage CFL bulb. For customers with 208, 240 volt system, the only option has been to pay large expenditures in order to convert electric panels, and rewire to accommodate lower voltages.

What does It take to replace a 400watt metal hallide
If you have a “ballast start fixture” then you must remove or wire around the existing ballast to install a self ballast CFL. I do not replace HID ballast anymore I always rewire the fixture and install CFL’s
I use the Max lite 200 watt. If you have a problem with the wide base of the CFL then you can use a “base adapter” ( cost about 6 bucks) that will increase the distance needed to clear the CFL’s internal ballast.
I also have a company that can retro fit to 6 lamps T5 or T8.
I work as a facilities manager for a large retail chain and have done extensive research on lighting in the past 2 years. I nagotiated all of my lighting retro fits to include upfront tax credits, abondoment credits and a 4 years PARTS AND LABOR WARRANTY. The ROI is unbelievable.

I am a rookie energy engineer! For one of the facility that our firm recently conducted energy audit, I would like to propose a following retrofit kit than the standard 4LampT5HO fixture which I think would cost more than the retrofit kit. I would appreciate if you can answer the below mind boggling questions I have for the kit!
1) The new ballast of the retrofit kit would replace the existing ballast
2) If you are not removing the metal halide ballast, how can you bypass that with a CFL and where does the retrofit kit ballast would be installed.
3) Based on your experience you think this would be an ideal candidate for a 400W Wall pack metal halide fixture.
